Breve descrizione dei contenuti:
We conducted an electronic search using the CDC WONDER (Wide-Ranging, Online Data for Epidemiologic Research) online database. The age-adjusted death rate (×100 000) for acute appendicitis in the United States was 0.060 (95%CI, 0.055-0.065) in the pre-COVID-19 period (2018-2019) but increased to 0.081 (95%CI, 0.074-0.087) in the COVID-19 peak period (2020-2021). Overall, the risk of dying from acute appendicitis was 22% higher during the epidemiological peak of COVID-19 than in the previous period (OR, 1.22; 95%CI, 1.09-1.36; p<0.001). In summary, the results of our analysis of the official CDC WONDER database show that the age-adjusted death rate for acute appendicitis in the United States increased significantly during the COVID-19 peak period.
