Professor Roberto Salvia is an internationally renowned pancreatic surgeon. His research activity is focused on pancreatic neoplasms. He was a panelist of Fukuoka international management guidelines of IPMNs, and authored seminal papers on genomics in pancreatic cancer and IPMNs. Professor Salvia is the coordinator of the pancreatic surgery program at the University of Verona hospital Trust.

Research groups

Adenocarcinoma duttale del pancreas
La ricerca clinica sull’adenocarcinoma duttale del pancreas è focalizzata sull’ottimizzazione del trattamento multimodale (chirurgia – chemioterapia – radioterapia), con particolare riferimento all’ambito neoadiuvante nella malattia resecabile e resecabile borderline. Altre linee di ricerca riguardano l’analisi dinamica dei determinanti di sopravvivenza dopo resezione e la mappatura del coinvolgimento linfonodale. I progetti di ricerca sono integrati con le unità operative dell’istituto del pancreas e con altre istituzioni di riferimento internazionale. La ricerca traslazionale è integrata con il centro di ricerca ARC-NET nel contesto del consorzio internazionale per lo studio del genoma del cancro

The main fields of research of the study group are pancreatic neoplasms (cystic tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, ductal adenocarcinoma) and ablative techniques.
Patologie cistiche del pancreas
La ricerca sulle neoplasie cistiche è attualmente focalizzata sulla storia naturale delle neoplasie intraduttali papillari mucinose dei dotti periferici (BD-IPMN) e sulla sicurezza a lungo termine del nostro protocollo di follow-up. Il gruppo si dedica a tutte le sfaccettature della patologia in oggetto. In particolare al rischio di una patologia cistica pancreatica di albergare un tumore maligno, all’appropriatezza delle linee guida internazionali attualmente disponibili, ed alle metodiche di follow-up utilizzate per controllare tutti coloro i quali abbiano delle cisti che non devono essere sottoposte a intervento
Prevenzione e gestione delle complicanze in chirurgia pancreatica
Il gruppo si occupa di studiare, definire, e prevenire le complicanze in chirurgia pancreatica. Come obiettivo secondario vengono avviati studi volti alla migliore gestione possibile di suddette complicanze.
Qualità di vita e aderenza alle cure per patologie pancreatiche
Negli ultimi anni, il Centro di Verona ha posto l’attenzione allo sviluppo di un approccio “centrato sulla persona” che promuove, in aggiunta agli aspetti strettamente medici/chirurgici, anche l’analisi delle componenti cognitive (bisogni informativi, credenze e conoscenze sulla malattia), psicologiche (livello di distress, ansia e depressione) e comportamentali (stile di coping) di ogni paziente. Il gruppo di ricerca promuove protocolli di studi volti ad indagare tecniche e metodologie sempre più efficaci al fine di aumentare l’empowerment del paziente nella sua complessità, migliorandone la partecipazione nell’iter di cura, la compliance e la soddisfazione globale.
Sorveglianza secondaria per neoplasie pancreatiche
Presso la Chirurgia Generale e del Pancreas è attivo un ambulatorio dedicato alla familiarità/predisposizione genetica per tumore pancreatico, che si svolge nell’ambito di tre registri multicentrici (uno nazionale, due Internazionali). L’attenzione dedicata alle persone a maggior rischio di sviluppare un tumore del pancreas è una prerogativa dell’Unità Operativa, e sono in corso diversi studi clinici attraverso l’analisi dei risultati di valutazioni radiologiche, psicologiche e molecolari, grazie alla possibilità di un biosampling dedicato
Tecnologie e nuove linee di sviluppo in chirurgia pancreatica
A Verona è attivo un programma di chirurgia mini-invasiva del pancreas sin dal 2000. Le tecnologie di resezione robotica e laparoscopica, così come altre tecnologie innovative, costituiscono aree in continua crescita. Le linee di ricerca attuali prevedono il confronto delle innovazioni con le tecniche standard al fine di migliorare la pratica clinica e ridurre le complicanze chirurgiche. l gruppo include i "MIPS VR": dottorandi di ricerca, gli assegnisti di ricerca, i titolari di borsa di studio e i medici in formazione specialistica
