My research area concerns automation and robotics, especially in unconventional areas, such as medicine and surgery, exploration and remote control of physical devices. In recent years, I have mainly dealt with aspects related to robotic surgery, developing new algorithms and, with a company I founded, also designing a new surgical robot.
Although this area is always at the center of my research, the diffusion of the technologies of the Internet of Things, and Industry 4.0 allows me to apply the concepts developed for the medical area also to conventional applications such as automation and industrial robotics. Even in these areas, in fact, the new generation of industrial robots allows collaborative work and therefore the problems of work safety and protection from computer intrusion have become very important.
Lately I have received funding from the European Community to address the problems of autonomous robotic surgery, that is, the development of those "intelligent" functions that will allow robots to collaborate with the surgeon during an intervention. The same techniques can also be applied to different fields, because they are based on the analysis of large amounts of data, "big data", and on the use of machine learning methods, "machine learning". The robotic systems we are developing will therefore allow specific actions to be performed, learned by processing data from previous situations and on the basis of current data.

ForMe - Formal Methods for the Design of Engineering Systems
The aim of the research group is to apply formal methods to modelling, verification and synthesis of engineering systems. The domains range from timed systems to nonlinear cyberphysical systems.
Information Extraction for Robotic Surgery
The research group focuses on researching and developing techniques for extracting information from manuals and textual content in the field of robotic surgery. It involves the University of Verona (with three departments: Computer Science, Engineering for Innovation Medicine, and Foreign Languages and Literatures) and the University of Mannheim (Germany).

Topic Description Research area
AI, Robotics & Automatic Control Robotics is concerned with the development of systems that make the intelligent connection between perception and action. For this reason, robotics is strongly interdisciplinary, including mechanical and electronic design, computation and data fusion algorithms, machine learning and reasoning, and motion control and environment interaction methods. In the last years, robotics systems have matured in terms of safety and reliability and they can now work in delicate environments and in direct contact with people. In case of demanding cognitive tasks, robots are usually supported by a human operator, in a teleoperation mode. A well established example of teleoperation system is a surgical robot, in which a surgeon directly moves the robotic tools to carry out the intervention. A new research direction is the addition of autonomous functions to the robotic systems. To reach this goal, we need to improve the perceptual and cognitive capabilities of the robots, to interact safely with a complex real environment. Some of the research topics addressed at the University of Verona include: control and system theory, modeling and analysis of human perception, coordination of multiple-robot systems, distributed sensing and control algorithms, teleoperation algorithms, and analysis of the physical interaction of humans and robots.
