Curriculum

Carlo Chiurco is Associate professor of Philosophy at the Department of Medicine for Innovation Engineering. After working as a civil servant for the Italian Ministry of Artistic and Cultural Heritage from 1999 to 2010, he became Assistant professor at the Department of Human Sciences of the University of Verona in December 2011. In 2019 he became Associate professor, and in 2023 he moved to his current Department. In 2020 he was awarded a two-years research grant for the project «HEALING – HEALth and Illness in Nietzsche and the Greeks». He is currently supervising the Marie Sklodowska-Curie project «NET – Nietzsche’s Environmental Ethics».

His research activity bridges history of philosophy and ideas with applied ethics, especially medical ethics and bioethics, and its main areas of interest are:

  1. The philosophy of Nietzsche, in particular the figures of the «free spirit», the dynamics presiding over the rise and fall of civilizations, the concepts of resentments, health, and illness.
  2. Health and illness between philosophy, culture, society, and medicine.
  3. Vulnerability as philosophical, ethical, social and medical paradigm.
  4. Medical ethics, bioethics, the ethics of caring, dialogic thinking and its possible applications to medicine.
