Dr. Mafficini has a MSc. degree in Biotechnologies and obtained in 2007 his PhD in Gastroenterological Sciences from the University of Verona. His doctorate research program was focused on the proteomics of pancreatic cancer cells as a source for new potential markers of disease.
As a post-doc, he extended his interests in the field of oncology research, including the molecular pathoogy of gastrointestinal and pulmonary neoplasms. In the last six years he focused on the genomic characterization of these neoplasms through bioinformatic analysis and next-generation sequencing, with particular interest on the translational aspects of targeted analyses by multigenic panels.
In January 2016 he was awarded the "Jeremy Jass Prize for Research Excellence in Pathology” for the research paper “Targeted next-generation sequencing of cancer genes dissects the molecular profiles of intraductal papillary neoplasms of the pancreas”, published on the Journal of Pathology.
He collaborated to the International Cancer Genome Consortium and to the european FP7 project Cam-Pac for the genomic and transcriptomic characterization of pancreatic neoplasms and their animal models.
